image author: Stadt Garding The town Garding is situated at the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein amidst the countryside of Eiderstedt.
Today, the area surrounding Garding, washed around by the North Sea has been for millions of years a kind of fighting object between land and sea.
The little town has 2.700 citizens but already since the 12.10.1590 the municipal law, bestowed by duke Johann Adolf to Schleswig-Holstein Gottorf, and is located as business centre of the landscape central on the peninsula Eiderstedt.

3 kilometres away is the little village of Katharinenheerd for instance. Well worth seeing is the homey village church with a wealth of valuable inventory. At the outer choir wall is a relief of the Eiderstedter national heroine 'Martje Flohrs', with a drinking motto 'Et gah uns wohl up unse olen Dage'(we are well in our old age). Martje Flohrs was born in Katharinenheerd and has been godmother to many children.
One should have also seen the typical farmhouses, the 'Haubarge', of the region.
If you want to spend your holiday peaceful and quietly, this town is right for you. In an ideal way one can combine a recreational holiday in the countryside with a seaside vacation.
Bathing beaches can be found nearby at the villages Ülvesbüll, Norderheverkoog and Westerhever (where the worldfamous Westerhever lighthouse is standing).

There are many options if you want to do sports. For instance riding in a substantial riding hall or at the riding ring. There are tennis courts for tennis lovers. The leisure time hall has the most modern sports equipment for their guests. Two bowling alleys are connected to the multipurpose hall.
Many hiking and cycle paths are situated around Garding and offer if used the chance to breath in the iodine sea air and enjoy the aroma of blooming rape fields or that of hay during harvest. The grey heron eyrie where one can watch the grey heron in the middle of the city is for many visitors a first.

image author: Stadt Garding The recreation area in the immediate vicinity 'Kirchkoog' is the town forest which is popular with visitors and locals.
The town of Garding is proud of the scientist Theodor Mommsen who was born in Garding on 30. November 1817. A professor, whose work especially his classic and lasting act about Roman history was honoured in 1902 with the awarding of the literature Nobel Prize.
Theodor Mommsen's birthplace is probably one of the oldest houses of the town and today a memorial place.
Come to Garding, enjoy a few days North Sea and forget about everyday life. In our over 400-year-old small town with its nearly 900 years old St. Christians church, amidst Eiderstedt, the world is still all right!
