Until the completion of the Eider barrier in 1973, wide mudflat landscapes formed the appearance of the Katinger Watt. Today we discover where once the mudflat worm dug, a polder landscape formed by fresh water. We will find many biotope types places, which are a hideaway for several animal and plant species. To bring you, the visitor to the peninsula Eiderstedt, this fascinating area nearer, the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (nature conservation federation Germany) maintains the Nature centre Katinger Watt between the old Eider dyke and the new outer dyke to the North Sea.
You can, among other things, visit an exhibition, that addresses different nature themes of the North Sea coast and dedicates itself especially to the history and present of the Eider estuary. In two rooms, you have the opportunity to get to know more about the nature around the Eider estuary through microscopes and aquariums. And those who want to take knowledge home just have to rummage at the NABU Shop or at the centres own library. Afterwards not only garden lovers can let themselves be bewitched by the scents of the herb garden.
The nature centre has also a lot of exciting attractions for little visitors. Once a week, small and big environment good noses, can learn about the life of the knot (Calidris canutus) and many other birds, tinker with seashells, feathers and sand, paint, watch video films, explore and have of course lots of fun.
For those who want to experience nature directly, the nature centre has put together again this year a programme of many interesting excursions. Whether you let yourself in into the secrets of the ocean bed or travel by bike into the history of the Katinger Watt. Whether you get to know the life of many coastal bird while on a romantic walk through the Olversumer foreland or experience a birds paradise at a walk through the Katinger Watt to the watch huts - at all nature excursions which are conducted by the co-workers of the nature centre, a lot can be learned about the coastal flora and fauna and about the history of the Katinger Watt.
The gates of the Katinger Watt aren't closing at sunset. Then you can take part at a bat-guided tour. Let yourself be fascinated by these creatures that glide silently through the night, 'see' with their ears and fly with their 'hands'. It's really worth it. Just have a look at this years event programme; something will be most definitely appeal to you.
