One of the oldest houses in the
town of Garding is the 'Alte Diakonat' (old diaconry); it was build in 1572. Until 1892 domicile of the 2. Gardinger pastor, the deacon. A private school from 1901 to 1911.
Birthplace of the first German Nobel laureate for literature Prof. Dr. Theodor Mommsen (1817-1903).
The town of Garding is proud of the scientist who was born here on 30. Nov. 1817.
A professor, whose classic work about Roman history was recognised in 1902 with the bestowal of the Nobel Prize for literature.
Mommsen's 'Roman history' and his 'Roman constitutional law' are still today the basic for Roman historian. He was a national-liberal and member of the Prussian assembly building and from 1881 to 1884 also member of the German Reichstag. Theodor Mommsen is honorary citizen of the town Garding.
