Nature centre Katinger Watt - Lina Hähnle House
Experience nature, that is the keyword. More precisely, competent information and experience in one. Taste that you smell. See, that you hear. Feel, that you know. To get involved with the original and natural, that is the centre of the nature centre. At storm, when trees are bowing down to the earth, at sunshine, when the the mist rises in the morning from the meadows, in spring and autumn, when migrating birds darken the sky, it doesn't matter what the weather is like or what season when you visit us, the Katinger Watt has always a special shine.
Where once mudflat worms and Sandklaffmuschel (shell) lived, today we find a polder landscape after the building of the Eiderbarrier. A mosaic of swamp areas, tarns, lakes, deciduous forest, cattail, green and field areas offer new habitat for many animal and plant species. At the exhibition at the nature centre Katinger Watt, you can inform yourself about the man-made destroyed old and the man-made rebuild new.
Go on a time trip to the formation history of the Katinger Watts, let youself be fascinated from the habitat mudflat. With the help of photos, binokulars, compounds, dioramas, films and talks you can inform yourself about nature study themes. The centre's garden, where the name giver Lina Hähnle, would have felt at home, offers apart from the study-garden with herbs, swamp and saline meadow beds, also a place for resting. A picnic under the appletree or just a few quiet minutes on the leafy veranda - there are many options at the nature centre Katinger Watt to escape everyday life.
While our little guests can watch a beach scrimp close-up or are totally absorbed in one of our nature experience plays, you can peacefully rummage through the library or bookshop at the main house. After that, the whole family goes on a discovering tour. Children at the ages 5-12 years old will discover, that nature can be fun at our children's afternoons or children mudflat discoveries.
Whether you see into the secrets of the sea floor, at a ornithological excursion come near the dream of flying while watching birds or at a bike trip through the Katinger Watt feel the wind in your hair, you will always be accompanied by co-workers of the nature centre Katinger Watt at public excursions. If you want to go on your own, you don't have to miss the optical proximity of a bird. Lent a pair of binocular and be near the world of the birds without disturbing them.
The people of the civilian service and the FÖJlerin (Freiwilliges Ökologisches Jahr)((voluntary ecological year)) as well as biologists, from the nature protection league Schleswig-Holstein who work at the Katinger Watt, to do public relations, look after the whole Eider estuary area. The nature protection areas Grüne Insel, Oldensworter Vorland and the Dithmarscher Eidervorland, situated south of the Eider estuary have to be controlled regularly. Stock has to be taken of all the sea and costal bird species. They are counted fortnightly and the results are used for research.
If you want to have a look at the data, take part at a guided tour or want to book an appointment for a group, just drop in or call us. The nature centre Katinger Watt directly at the national park Schleswig-Holsteinisches Wattenmeer, imbedded between the old Eider dyke and the North Sea's outer dyke, 3km north of the Eider barrier is always worth a visit. We look forward to seeing you at the nature centre daily from April to November from 10am - 6pm. You can refer to our guided tour offers on the page Programm 2001 or have a leaflet send. And don't forget our year highlights to the bird migration: The nature experience days in May and the Westküstenvogelkiek (westcoast bird look)at the 1. October weekend.
