Its not a Olympic discipline yet but was a very necessary procedure in the olden days.
Then streets and paths were not so well constructed as today, so the marsh farmer needed the 'Klootstock', to jump cross-country over ditches to count his livestock and visit his neighbour.
The 'Klootstock' is a jumping stick or better a jumping pole (2,50m - 4,00m), as they are used for pole vault. Only one doesn't want to jump high but long which means over the ditch. The Kloothstock has a thicker end, the 'Kloot' or 'Kluut' = Klumpen (lump).
It prevents the pole sinking into the soft soil. To jump one needs a little bit of an impetus and has to hold on tight to the pole.
The spectators of the Klootstocks jumping have the time of their life, if somebody is slipping of the pole and falls into the ditch. There is a prize of consolation for the unlucky fellow... a drink.
With these events during the summer, guests get to know local tradition.
