Husum at the North Sea

Husum at the North Sea is the county town of Nordfriesland. One thinks first of the poet Theodor Storm, when one hears the name Husum.

Other artists have also been inspired by the countryside.

Whether at the Ludwig-Nissen-Haus, at the palace outside Husum, at the Seebüller Nolde-Museum or at any of the many galleries, everywhere one is able, through the different interpretations, to recognise what makes this swathe of land so unique.

One says, once you love the North Sea it is a love for life. The sea with its change of tides, the unique face of thid landscape forms. Nature pure. It is everywhere in the Husumer bay. Big parts of the north beach were lost during a strom flood in the 14th-century. Through this, Husum became a port city. Husum had its first heyday in the 16th-century. Today Husum has 21.000 citizens. It is the economical centre of Nordfriesland.

The town has lots to offer like romantic alleys in the historical old town where also the Storm-Museum can be found.
Changing special events are offered by the Museum Ludwig-Nissen-Haus, the Ostenfelder Bauernhaus (farmhouse) and the Schiffahrtsmuseum (shipping museum).

At the port, which meets directly into the city centre one can see the many shrimp fishing boats. At the towns centre a weekly market takes place around the 'Tinebrunnen' (fountain) every Tuesday. Shops are ideal for strolling around. Last but not least the culinary delicacies have to be mentioned, which are offered in so many different restaurants.

The palace near Husum, once the seat of the dowagers, with its fireplaces from the 17th-century, offers constantly changing exhibitions and many concerts in a stylish frame.

The palace's park changes from March to April into a lilac sea of blooms. Ca. 4.000.000 wild crocuses are blooming here.

There is no trace of the cool northerner if there is something to celebrate. And there is always a reason to celebrate.

Photo days in May, Husumer port days in August, Pole-Poppenspäler-Days or the film festival in September.

Last but not least the concerts of the Schleswig-Holstein Music festivals in the Marien church or in Schobüllthe 'small church at the sea'.

Sport of course is part of the 'joie de vivre', so there is a lot on offer: Swimming either at the natural beach or in the public swimming pool, sailing, surfing or paddling. Riding, tennis, cycling or golfing, everything the heart desires.
