A Husumer emigrant donated to his hometown the funds to build a museum in 1924, that was to present the special features of the coastal countryside and the culture of the inhabitants broadly and generally coherent.
Apart from natural history and folklore themes, coastal geology, trade, house building, dyke building and storm surges, the 'Nissen House' also exhibit an extensive art and painting collection.
From the inheritance of Ludwig Nissen, a collection of American impressions of the 19.century can be seen. It is the most important outside Americas.
A special section is dedicated to the history of North Friesian and Schleswig Holstein emigrants and the mudflat coast. .
