The high school teacher Magnus Voß founded the museum in 1899, as Germany's first open-air museum. The house was built around 1650 and stems from the neighbouring village of Ostenfeld.
The facility encompasses a Low German half-timbered hall house and a so-called panelled-wall barn.
The museum burnt down in 1986, caused by playing children, valuable pieces of furnishings could be salvaged resp restored and the house was rebuilt.
Richly decorated furniture (Rotter Last Supper cupboard) and wall panelling in the banquet room (Pesel) of the house as well as several household items document today very impressively the farming culture of the Ostenfelder region from the 17. to 19.century.
